Cannes It

Here at Gresham Blake we always look forward to Cannes, as it's traditionally the most glamorous of the glamorous annual red carpet events. All luxurious yachts and sun kissed starlets, with endless opportunities for the great and the good to parade around in the finest threads known to man. And it's not just the premiere's. There are party's, gala dinners and benefits to be attended too. Some inspire us in our made to measure endeavours, others make us realise what's best to avoid. All are fascinating viewing though and here's our overview of the first week's activity.

As one of this years judging panel, Ewan McGregor, has been out and about more than most and dressed in some absolute top notch attire. The foppish force is strong with this one.

He's nothing less than sharp every time, and the big hair gives him a modern edge, especially with the traditional tux. All the suits are tailored to fit him so well and have been accessorised to perfection, particularly the daytime suit with light shoes and a standout tie. Ten out of ten!

Speaking of light, there 's been a good deal of white on show, some carried off with more succes than others. Starting with director Wes Anderson, going for more of a preppy look, always good for the daytime.

Boris Becker aces it (sorry!) in classic black and white, marrying up the white jacket with a white shir, classic black tie and black trousers.

Diddy's look is much the same but he raises the game just a touch, wearing a bow tie and matching pocket square.

This fierce two tone production comes courtesy of Lapo Elkann, heir to the Fiat empire and regular in the many an international 'Best Dressed' list. A white double breasted jacket, with starkly contrasting black buttons and wide peaked lapels sits nicely atop his white trousers with contrast dress stripe. This is definitely not a look for the wall flowers among us.

And here's Lapo again, showing off his skills in an amost identical outfit, this time in blue (even down to the glasses!).

Staying on a blue note, Alec Baldwin cuts a dash in a super sharp, well tailored, midnight blue, suit by Ermenegildo Zegna. It looks that good on him, he's in real danger of upsatging the lady on his arm.

We've rounded up a few of our favourite traditional black tie looks too. Giorgio Armani, in a three piece classic black tux, Brad Pitt makes up for the scruffy haired look by adding a classic cummerbund, Robert Pattinson, sporting super slim lapels on his two piece and Novak Djokovic accessorises his two piece with a matching bow tie and pocket square.

Lastly, the 'Needs Improvement' section. Cuba Gooding Jnr looks a little perturbed and we can only put it down to one thing; the length of his waistcoat. It's generally accepted that a waistcoat should sit below the trouser waistband to avoid the peeping shirt syndrome in evidence here.

Greying over here we've got Chris Rock looks shabby, not chic and stooping over with his hands in his trouser pockets really doesn't help.

Ben Stiller rated so highly in our last blog, a real hit looking all classy in midnight blue. But this head to toe grey really isn't working for us. The colour really washes him out completely, making it a definite miss for us this time around.
